An area college is hoping a new scholarship will make a difference for the state.
Glenville State College has established the Don and Mary Jean Barker Scholarship to support students pursuing education careers.
The scholarship will be available to students from central West Virginia.
Staff said they want to encourage a new generation to take over classrooms for teachers as they retire.
"In some of the math and science areas, there tend to be, and in special education as well, there tend to be more teacher shortages, but we welcome anyone who wants to come to Glenville State and major in education," said Glenville State professor Shelly Ratliff.
The scholarship will be available to students starting this semester.
