Cancer affects families around the world and being diagnosed with cancer can be a frightening experience.
United Hospital Center is working to relieve some of that fear with a new DVD called, "You're Not Alone: Understanding the Journey Through Cancer with UHC."
The purpose of the DVD is to encourage patients to become active partners in their own treatment. The DVD features sections, including what cancer is; cancer treatment; cancer surgery; chemotherapy; radiation therapy; pain management; rehabilitation; physical and occupational therapy; healthy diet; and communicating with your UHC Medical Team.
We spoke with a cancer survivor who's featured in the film and an oncologist who works with cancer patients each day.
"When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, my world turned upside down. Everything turned to gray. But this video, had it been available, would had been a tremendous tool to understand," said Peg Holmes, a cancer survivor.
"To provide a tool to people to see where they are going when they go for cancer treatment, and what it might look like, the machinery that might be used to get radiation, what it looks like to sit in the infusion center," said Linda Carte, director of Oncology at UHC.
