HUNTINGTON — Huntington City Council has unanimously renewed the naming rights of Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

The naming rights agreement calls for the retail furniture and appliance chain to pay the city $150,000 a year for five years, for a total payment of $750,000 over the life of the contract. According to arena General Manager Brian Sipe, the new agreement calls for $5,000 more each year than what Big Sandy has been paying since 2003. The revenue from the arena's naming rights goes into the city's general fund.

Sipe said the agreement not only will generate significant revenue for the city but also provide substantial additional value in marketing and advertising.

"We are ecstatic to have Big Sandy Superstore renew their naming rights with us," said Sipe. "We love their partnership as we continue to make Huntington, West Virginia, the premier entertainment venue in the state."

"The partnership has been good for us over the past ten years", said Dan Evans, director of marketing for Big Sandy Superstore, "and it looks like that will continue for years to come."

Located at 3rd Avenue and 8th Street in downtown Huntington, the Big Sandy Superstore Arena is a 7,500-seat multi-purpose facility.

According to Veronica L. Hordubay, marketing and sales manager at the arena, the facility hosts an average 250 event days per year, including concerts, family shows and trade shows, along with state and regional athletic competitions. A recently renovated conference wing has been renamed the Convention Center. Hordubay noted it offers more than 15,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, state-of-the art technology upgrades, catering and two on-site event planners.

The arena and convention center are owned by the city of Huntington and managed by SMG, which describes itself as "the world's largest private management firm for public assembly facilities." It manages more than 220 public facilities worldwide.
