City of Morgantown Expresses Interest in Home Rule

Posted: Updated:

Legislation allowing municipalities to strengthen state codes may be coming to Morgantown.

It's called Home Rule, and it's expanding. Five cities, including Bridgeport, currently have home rule.

The state has agreed to continue the trial program for another five years.

The city of Morgantown said many participants have benefited from the program, and it would like to be involved.

"We have a lot of transient population, a lot of rentals properties, close to 10,000 rental units. We need to look at the difference between our cities and other cities, and modify the state law so it makes more sense to how we can deal with situation in our city," said Morgantown City Manager Jeff Mikorski.

In February of 2013, Fairmont City Council met in a work session to discuss the possibility of becoming one of the cities in W.Va. to have Home Rule as well. Clarksburg City Council also expressed its interest in Home Rule in February after meeting with the mayor of Wheeling, who explained how the home rule pilot program helped his city.
