While teachers in Lewis County were getting ready for the start of school this week, administrators started planning for an addition to Jane Lew Elementary School.
The Board of Education wants to add to the existing school to bring all four grades into the same building.
Older students currently have classes in a second aging building across the parking lot.
Board president Paul Derico said the new building is greatly needed.
"It would be easier and better financially to replace that building that was built in 1954. And this also, for a safety feature, will bring all those students into one building," Derico said.
Derico said the board is considering plans now and hopefully will begin construction sometime next year.
In April, the School Building Authority gave the county more than $3 million for renovations and expansion.
