If you cast your ballot on Election Day, there’s a strong chance are you did it in a school or other public building. Schools and churches in the Mountain State are the most common locations for setting up polling places. And it’s been that way for a long time.

CHARLESTON, WV -

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History will welcome some of the state's best seamstresses to demonstrate their embroidery and quilting techniques Aug. 17 at the Culture Center for Quilt Day.

In addition to participating in hands-on demonstrations, visitors will be able to browse the Sesquicentennial Quilt and Juried Quilt Exhibition on display in the Culture Center's Great Hall, as well as historic quilts on display in the West Virginia State Museum.

The event is free and open to the public.

The juried exhibition features 62 quilts and wall hangings displaying the talents of 57 quilters from 23 counties.

The West Virginia Sesquicentennial Quilt features statewide icons such as Camden Park and Sandstone Falls. It commemorates the state's 150th birthday this year, and was created by 72 quilters who came from throughout West Virginia.

Each of the state's 55 counties is represented by at least one quilt square made from Civil War-era fabric donated by Andover Fabrics of New York City.

Joan E. Hoffman will demonstrate hand quilting on a Linus quilt provided by Phyllis Handley of Quilts by Phyllis in Hurricane. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. visitors will be able to take a few stitches on the quilt, which will be donated to a local neo-natal intensive care unit.

Handley will be available to share information about the West Virginia Quilt Shop Hop, which is an annual four-day event in which nearly a dozen quilt shops across the state offer different patterns and fabric kits for quilters to create a unique quilt as a memory of their journeys. She will have last year's shop hop quilt on display.

Sheryl Carpenter of Parkersburg Sewing and Quilting will demonstrate long-arm quilting, and Sherry Higginbotham of Majestic Mountain Needle Arts Guild will demonstrate embroidery techniques.
