UPDATE: Work Underway on Leading Creek Elementary School

Posted: Updated:

It's almost time to begin construction on a new school in Lewis County.

Workers are almost done with the site preparation for the new Leading Creek Elementary School.

The new school will house students from both Lewis and Gilmer counties.

Officials said contractors should be able to start construction in the middle of October.

Original story

Take Route 33 west out of Weston, and the site of the new Leading Creek Elementary School is hard to miss, with heavy machinery already getting the site ready for construction.

Recently, the biggest obstacle has been Mother Nature.

"The site work has already started. Rain's been a big problem lately, but it's going pretty well," said Gilmer County Superintendent Dr. Ronald Blankenship.

The weather has already put work behind schedule by a month. But officials are still eager to get work started. Lewis County Superintendent Dr. Joseph Mace said that while the older buildings at Troy and Alum Bridge Elementary are still useable, it's time for an upgrade.

"The standards today and the standards of 1920 have completely changed, everything from the size of the classrooms to the insides of the schools. Everything's different, and this school will meet all federal and state standards in regard to health, safety and education," said Mace.

While the building will change, the education will not. The two county boards have agreed to staff the new building with teachers from the schools it's replacing, keeping most of the same teachers in the area.

"The instruction is just going to be as good in it as it was in the other schools because we're staffing it from the two schools," Mace said.

Blankenship said it won't be too long until people will see some concrete work being done. The School Building Authority has already approved the low bids for construction of Leading Creek Elementary.

"So as soon as the site preparation work is complete, the contract will be ready to go and we'll start seeing some blocks going up out there," Blankenship said.

Leading Creek Elementary was scheduled to open next fall, but now both superintendents are aiming for an opening in 2015.
