The Marion County Commission has turned over a piece of property for a future athletic complex to the Development Authority.
The Development Authority will lease the property, which is next to the "Poor Farm BMX Park" in Fairmont, to the East Marion Athletic Association for the next 30 years.
The Athletic Association will build two pony league baseball diamonds and a football field. This effort comes after the county lost a baseball and football field in East Fairmont when the construction of East Fairmont Junior High School began.
"There's a need for a pony league in Marion County. From what these are telling me, the surrounding counties do not have a pony league. You have little league and all this stuff, but we do not have pony league," said Charlie Reese, of the Marion County Development Authority.
The process will begin when the East Marion Athletic Association gets its nonprofit designation.
The commission fully supports the East Marion Athletic Association's effort because they believe the county needs more athletic facilities.
