More than 100 people came out to Fairmont State University Thursday to kick off the United Way of Marion County's 2013-2014 campaign.
This year's theme is "The Heart of Our Community is Caring and Sharing."
For the first time in Marion County, a family will serve as the campaign co-chairs.
The Phillips family, consisting of Christy Miller, Rosemary Phillips and Bill Phillips, will go out into the community to raise money for the United Way.
Its goal is $425,000, which is less than last year. Last year's goal was set at $455,000 but the organization raised nearly $460,000.
"We know that everyone has been asked to take a cut in some form. We thought if we lowered the goal, people would see how responsible we are being in these economic times. However, we do feel that even though we lowered the goal, we have such fantastic people working with us that we will exceed that goal," said Christy Miller, of the United Way of Marion County.
The United Way of Marion County supports 22 agencies.
