If you cast your ballot on Election Day, there’s a strong chance are you did it in a school or other public building. Schools and churches in the Mountain State are the most common locations for setting up polling places. And it’s been that way for a long time.

CHARLESTON, WV -

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is keeping an eye on all levels of education throughout West Virginia.

He asked the newly established, 19-member Governor's Commission on Middle Grades to study best practices and to develop specific recommendations for raising student achievement in West Virginia middle schools.

This comes after the regular session of the West Virginia Legislature that passed education reform measures Tomblin proposed that include a focus on third-grade reading standards as well as college and career readiness.

"Research shows middle school is the time when many students are at a critical crossroads," Tomblin told the commission, which is made up of educators, business leaders and lawmakers. "I believe, together, we can put these young minds on the path to educational and career success by making the connection between the students' personal interest and future career opportunities."

The Southern Regional Education Board presented research to the commission during the meeting, and the commission will study the board's report, "A New Mission for Middle Grades."

The commission has been asked to provide, by Jan. 15, specific recommendations for improving student achievement in West Virginia's middle grades.
