Wild & Wonderful Wednesday: Fly Fishing at Blackwater Outdoor Adventures

Posted: Updated:

It is no secret that the state of West Virginia is known for its natural resources. The rivers, lakes and mountains make for some great outdoor activities. Blackwater Falls is one of the most scenic parts of the state, which makes for some of the best fishing waters in Tucker County.

"Tucker County is a beautiful place to fish," Fly Fishing Instructor Doug Matthews said. "I think a lot of people don't tend to think of West Virginia as one of the main fisheries on the east coast. As a matter of fact, we are. We are a great fishery."

Fly fishing is a sport which takes lots of repetition in order to succeed. I had never been fly fishing before, which made it difficult to understand as soon as I entered the water.

"Here you go. It's time to catch dinner!" Matthews said.

That's how you know you're a real fisherman. It's time to go out and do it. Lets go!

"There's a big transition between gear fishing and then fly fishing. Basically, you're not casting the lure, you're casting the line when you fly fish. So that's a big transition that's kind of difficult for a lot of people to get," Matthews said.

Blackwater Outdoor Adventures does not offer fly fishing quite yet, but by the time next year rolls around, class will be in session.

"You can rent kayaks, tubes and canoes out here. You can fish off of them. You don't have to wait until we offer the guide services. But next spring we will have some services offered for you.," he said.

After nearly two hours of fly fishing, we had zero catches to account for. But who cares, there really is nothing like being out on the water.

"I really can't think of a better sport that enriches your soul nearly as much. How better to spend a day than to be on a river in a beautiful setting like this in this valley with the mountains all around us. It's a beautiful day. It's very stress free and it's a great way to relax," Matthews said.

The water was pretty stained out there. There was also a lot of rain over the last couple of days. That was a big reason for why we didn't catch anything, but it was still fun.

"Oh, you're good," Doug said when referring to my fishing skills. "It's just the transitioning over from gear fishing to fly fishing. Everybody has problems with it. There's just different kinetic motions that you do that differ greatly in between them. There are some things similar. But I can tell you're one heck of a gear fisherman."

Be sure to visit Blackwater Outdoor Adventures for a list of several outdoor activities.
