The Corporation for National and Community Service has awarded the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area a $260,000 AmeriCorps grant.
Elkins Mayor Van Broughton said the grant will support 20 AmeriCorps members who meet stewardship goals, weatherize historic public buildings or low income homes, and develop heritage tourism attractions.
Broughton said the money supports many projects in the region.
"Getting this grant we can get bigger and do more, and I will have put together a committee of other citizens and council to make sure the money we use will be used wisely," Mayor Broughton said.
Broughton said after a full term of service AmeriCorps members can get an education award to pay for college or student loans.
