Important Swimming Safety Tips to Keep in Mind For Summer

Posted: Updated:

As we move further into the summer months the temperatures go up, and some time in the water sounds even more appealing.

But it's important to always remember to take precautions.

"It's always good to remind the patrons that you should always swim with a buddy, at least one person or more, never swim alone. If you are going to a lake or a river its good to remember to never dive into an area where you can't see the bottom," said Tawnya Mann, the pool manager at Splash Zone in Clarksburg.

Swimming safety doesn't just apply to public pools, lakes, or rivers, but your backyard pool as well.

"Backyard safety applies to swimming with a buddy, and you shouldn't dive into shallow areas," Mann explained.

Splash Zone in Clarksburg takes pool safety seriously. When it comes to children, the pool doesn't allow floaties.

"We only allow the U.S. Coast Guard approved swimming devices. It's always important to remember that those are no substitute for having an adult with a child," said Mann.

With Independence day approaching many people will be celebrating near water and it's important to remember these safety tips from the American Red Cross:

- Only swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards

- Always swim with a buddy, and never swim alone

- Never leave a young child unattended

- Make sure everyone in your family knows how to swim well…if not enroll in a class

Splash Zone offers private swimming lessons for inexperienced swimmers. Visit its website to find out more.
