Some students go through what teachers call "the summer slide."
Energy Express is a summer reading program that helps kids avoid that slide. It puts students with a mentor to stay up-to-speed with reading and art.
It also provides students who qualify with breakfast and lunch each day.
"It's a smaller setting, there's only eight kids, so the mentors can give them more one on one attention which they might not get during the regular school year," said Lauren Daub, and Energy Express mentor. "They get to be in school and see that it can be fun."
