The Preston County Commission has denied allegations in a civil lawsuit filed by Courtney Austin, former Animal Control Officer for the county.
The commission requested that the suit be dismissed and that it recovers all costs and legal fees it has incurred with its defense. The commission also requests that Austin receive nothing from the commission, according to court filings.
Austin's suit requested back pay and benefits since being terminated from her position as the shelter manager in early February. Commissioners accused Austin of giving the public the impression that the Preston County Shelter was working to become a no-kill shelter on the shelter's Facebook page. After Austin posted a Facebook status about the frigid temperature and lack of water at the shelter, commissioners requested access to Austin's personal Facebook page. When Austin refused, she was suspended and later fired from her position.
