West Virginia State Police responded to the scene of a helicopter incident at Lower Hildebrand Road in Monongalia County that happened just before 12:30 Wednesday afternoon.
The small scout helicopter performed a hard landing in a secluded area near Shafer Brothers Construction at 668 Lower Hildebrand Road. The helicopter is owned by a sub contractor for Asplundh Tree Expert Company and was hired by First Energy, according to First Energy spokesman Todd Meyer.
The small helicopter had left from the Morgantown Airport and was headed to the Fairmont area to survey areas where crews plan to spray herbicide, said Tim Blankenship, Asplundh Tree Expert Company. A pilot and a passenger were on board the helicopter but they didn't sustain any injuries, Blankenship said.
Meyer said some type of mechanical failure occurred in the helicopter.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
