West Virginia University has received an award for going above and beyond in its stormwater management program.
The Department of Environmental Protection has given WVU an Environmental Excellence Award in the Municipal Stormwater category.
It has recognized the school's Environmental Health and Safety Department for taking the extra steps necessary to protect the environment.
"With all the new construction going on campus, our new standards, we need to manage the first one inch of run off. And we're implementing a lot of new low impact development green strategies, such as bio retention cells, some green roofs. So, it's more filtration practices," said Brian Lemme, WVU Stormwater specialist.
Lemme said the department is trying to stay away from the older, large stormwater retention ponds.
