Greater Clarksburg 10K Takes On New Theme in 2013

Posted: Updated:

There have been few sporting events around the Harrison County area that have been AS successful as the Greater Clarksburg 10K. Now entering its 17th year, the annual marathon race is set to kick off next weekend.

If you're attempting to run for the first time in the race, then here's a few things to keep in mind:

The Clarksburg 10K will begin next Saturday morning on June 15th, on main street in downtown Clarksburg.

The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the main event, the 10K race.

Soon after that at 10 a.m., the two-mile run and two-mile walk will coincide with one another. That will be followed by the Kids K race at 10:30 a.m.

Race Director Carl Hatfield said he's seen a big change in the variety of people who run.

"We seem to have a larger percentage of women running now days than we used to. So that's a good sign. But we also have a lot of younger runners who are starting to show up, particularly in our two mile race," Hatfield said.

This year's 10K will take an interesting angle, as the runners will be separated into either a Hatfield or a McCoy. The historical reference will take on a 'Family Feud' approach, which will help tally the scoring for the race.

When you go to sign up, you will be classified as a Hatfield or McCoy. But each participant will be running for one of six high schools in Harrison County.

As a result, those local high schools will earn money, going towards its cross country and track programs. The amount of money will be based on the how well the runners do in the race.

"Whichever team wins, either the Hatfield or the McCoy team, all six high schools in Harrison County will end up receiving a monetary amount to help promote cross country and track and field at their high school," Hatfield said.
