Former Elkins Track Star Cam Viney Advances to NCAA Championships as Member of Illini
EUGENE, OR. -
Division I athletes do not come around too often. NCAA statistics say the likelihood of playing any sport at the D-I level is not on your side. Of roughly seven million high school athletes, one percent will play at the top level.
Which is why seeing a former Elkins track star succeed in college is that much more satisfying.
Cameron Viney was a West Virginia State Champion in high school track last year, and he's carried that success over to his college career at the University of Illinois.
Viney will compete in the 4x400 meter relay for the Illini this week during the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
He also came within .03 of a second in qualifying for a spot in the 400 meter hurdles.
The NCAA Track and Field Championships will begin on Wednesday, with the 4x400 relay semifinal taking place on Thursday at 6:40 p.m. If Viney and his relay team advance, they will compete for a National Championship on Saturday at 3:50 p.m.
