Elkins Mayor Van Broughton is encouraging residents to wear purple to support the American Cancer Society.
Broughton signed a proclamation on Friday declaring that from June 2 to June 8, the city of Elkins will celebrate "Paint the Town Purple Week."
He said Relay for Life is a signature activity of the cancer society and is a cause everyone should support.
"Each day you learn more about a friend or family member or neighbor being diagnosed with cancer. This is a major issue in this country and this is a great cause for what this group is doing," Broughton said.
Mayor Broughton also declared June 8 as "Relay for Life Day."
