Deputy State Director & Communications Advisor,
Sen. Joe Manchin
More than anything else, Sara Payne Scarbro loves serving the people of West Virginia.
After earning her bachelor's degree from Marshall University in 2003 with a double major in political science and journalism, Scarbro went straight to work for the West Virginia Democratic Party.
That led to work as deputy press secretary for Gov. Bob Wise.
When Joe Manchin became governor in 2005, Scarbro stayed on as deputy press secretary and she has worked for Manchin ever since: managing his 2008 campaign for re-election, serving as the transition coordinator for his second term, working as press secretary and then communications director in that administration and running Manchin's campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2010.
Scarbro now serves Manchin as his deputy state director and communications advisor.
"I really enjoy my job because it's high-paced," Scarbro said. "It's something new every day."
Outside work, Scarbro serves as treasurer of the Public Relations Society of America's West Virginia Chapter, from which she received the Public Relations Practitioner of the Year Award in 2011.
She is a member of the Marshall University Alumni Association and serves on the Community Relations Council for the Charleston Job Corps.
Scarbro lives in Kanawha City with her husband and college sweetheart Derek Scarbro, who recently left leadership of the state Democratic Party to join Lewis Glasser Casey & Rollins in Charleston. They have two cats, Charley and Lizzy.
"My lifelong goal is to serve the people of West Virginia," Scarbro said. "No matter where life takes me in five or 10 years, my hope is that I'm still living in West Virginia and I'm still serving the people."
