If you cast your ballot on Election Day, there’s a strong chance are you did it in a school or other public building. Schools and churches in the Mountain State are the most common locations for setting up polling places. And it’s been that way for a long time.

CHARLESTON, WV -

West Virginia's 150th birthday will be marked by the United States Postal Service with a stamp to be introduced on June 20, West Virginia Day.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin will join USPS Executive Vice President and General Counsel Thomas J. Marshall on the steps of the State Capitol to dedicate the stamp at 1:50 p.m. June 20.

Stamps will be available for purchase and cancellation after the ceremony. The stamp is being issued as a Forever stamp and it will be on sale June 20 nationwide.

The stamp features a photograph from West Virginia-native Roger Spencer in October 2008. It shows an early morning in Monongahela National Forest from the Highland Scenic Highway in Pocahontas County.

Spencer said the image "evokes the serenity one feels when standing atop one of our mountains, breathing in the clean, refreshing, mountain air of a cool October morning, and viewing the landscape bathed in the surreal glow of the misty, early morning light," according to information from both the USPS and Tomblin's office.

Spencer said any image that represents West Virginia "must include our beloved mountains," and the stamp's image embodies both "The Mountain State" and its slogan, "Wild and Wonderful."

Tomblin said he's excited about the new stamp.

"The stamp is a beautiful depiction of our majestic mountains and forests – a little slice of ‘Almost Heaven,'" Tomblin said in a news release. "I can't think of a better way to mark West Virginia's 150th birthday."

West Virginia's four-day birthday celebration starts with the Sesquicentennial Ceremony. For details about the events, visit wv150.com.
