WV Division of Natural Resources Warns Against Feeding Wild Bears
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources recently reminded residents to not feed wild bears.
The DNR said in a press release that they have encountered the problem most often when people intentionally set out food in order to get a closer look at the animal. One DNR biologist said feeding bears is not only dangerous, but it can also lead to legal repercussions.
"It's illegal to feed bears," said Steve Rauch, one of the division's biologists. "The second reason is when you habituate bears with humans, and it ends up being a no-win situation."
Penalties for feeding bears include citations and, in some cases, a fine.
