Social media has become one of the fastest ways to get information out to the public and officials are using it to their advantage.
Marion County Central Communications (911) has created a Facebook page to pass on emergency information and clear up rumors that may be spreading.
Officials will post road closures, accidents, fires, and severe weather in the area.
Residents can even post pictures and information about emergency situations around the county.
"We don't want that to take place of the conventional notifications for an emergency. but if you see flooding in a certain part of the county, send the footage to us. we cant be everywhere at once. that helps us decide where to declare disasters and how we need to respond to it," said Chris McIntire, Central Communications director.
Central Communications and the local Emergency Planning Committee will update the page regularly.
