Canaan Valley Resort is celebrating the opening of a new shooting range.
The resort said it will be a great vacation destination for families.
"It's an additional amenity of sport shooting here for the state park, and adds an additional element to what we can offer park guests that come to Canaan Valley," said Rob Gilligan, park superintendent.
A dedication was held Friday for the Canaan Valley Resort Sporting Clays Five Stand Clay Target Field. Shooters fired five rounds from a shotgun from each shooting position for a total of 25 rounds. The trap can be set for an easy flight path for beginners or on automatic wobble for more advanced shooters. Officials said this provides another outdoor activity that visitors and guests at Canaan Valley Resort can enjoy.
"Shooting, recreational shooting, the shooting game, the sporting shooting is a great tradition in West Virginia, and across the country," said Frank Jezioro, director of W.Va. Division of Natural Resources. "not everybody just plays Golf. People like to have more than one amenity. They want to play golf in the morning, shoot in the afternoon, hike in the evening so you afford and give them every opportunity to enjoy all the outdoors."
U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) attended the opening of the Sporting Clay and Shooting Facility at the Canaan Valley State Park.
"Recreational shooting ranges and West Virginia state parks are a natural fit," Manchin said. "This is a wonderful new addition to Canaan Valley State Park and another great destination families to spend their vacations in West Virginia. If you like outdoor activities, we've got camping, hiking, fishing, cross country and downhill skiing, leaf-peeping, wildlife, tubing and now Sporting Clays shooting. I encourage all sportsmen and their families and friends to visit this new facility."
The shooting range was constructed as part of the resort's overall improvement package. Opening day for the sporting clays target field will be May 25.
The sporting clays field will be open seven days a week. Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday 12 to 4:30 p.m. Reservations recommended, but not necessary. Call 304-866-4121 ext. 92691. or visit the resort's website.
"Just look at this setting, it's just absolutely gorgeous in Canaan Valley, and people come here and they look for things to do in the outdoors, and we've got something additional that they haven't had before," Gilligan said.
