Friends of Stydahar Field Getting Close to Goal of New Turf Field

Posted: Updated:

On April 14, Friends of Stydahar Field held a kick off meeting at Lincoln High School to discuss fundraising for a new turf football field at Stydahar Field.

Now, just three short weeks later, the field is just within reach.

"Its going to take a lot of hard work, and we're not there yet as far as getting every dollar that's needed but as far as getting the project going, we're pretty close," said Robert Herrod, Lincoln High School football coach.

Herrod said the new turf is much needed; the current field almost prevented Lincoln from hosting its first ever home playoff game.

"Two years ago, we went 9-1, had our first home playoff game, and it was an issue if we could even play here or not. We had so much rain during that season and the field was pretty beat up," Herrod said. "That would have been a pretty sad thing if we would have been able to host a playoff game the first time in the history of the school and weren't able to do it," said Herrod.

The athletes experience firsthand the condition of the current field.

"I don't know how many times last year we had people out there practicing and they would roll an ankle in a hole in the field, or something to that nature," said Ty Seibel, a Lincoln junior and football player.

After many private donors, an elimination dinner, and fundraising, the first steps of the process are about to begin as soon as this weekend.

"Saturday, I believe, they're going to be removing the light posts. As far as the pro grass getting in here, my understanding is Monday they should be here. I think we're ready to go," said Herrod.
