West Virginia Draft Horse and Mule Association Has Field Day in Buckhannon

Draft Horses and Mules were having a field day in Upshur County.

The West Virginia Draft Horse and Mule Association held a demonstration Saturday in Buckhannon.

Owners put horses and mules through their paces, demonstrating everything from plowing to hauling bales of hay.

Prizes were awarded for the best time in competitions involving the log skid and hay toss.

About 12 teams representing West Virginia and Pennsylvania came out to show what still is being used almost a decade later.

"They mow with them, plow with them, cultivate for potatoes. Mules can mow a lot longer than a horse because you have to stop them and rest them, more than you do these big horses.," said Delmer Hershman, president of the WV Draft Horse and Mule Association.

Wagon rides were also offered. The association is looking for new members and it holds field day events twice a year.
