The 50th anniversary of the Dola Mine Disaster is coming up and families of those victims plan to commemorate that day.
It will hold a gathering this Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Dola Mine Memorial. Families will welcome anyone else who is not related to the victims. Even though the disaster happened 50 years ago, the relative of one victim said its still important to remember the victims.
"We don't want these miners forgotten," said Debra Stout, who is the granddaughter of one of the victims. "We want these miners remembered, and they won't be forgotten in our eyes. But we want to keep the memory going. And that's why we're having this."
The memorial opened in 2006 and has been funded completely by donations.
