Preston County residents who do not post their house numbers according to code could be fined.
The county commission is looking to amend its current ordinance which would fine residents up to $500 for not posting their house numbers according to the code.
The Office of Emergency Management said first responders often waste valuable time searching for unmarked homes.
"It causes a big problem when we have an emergency. We're trying to direct EMS, police, fire to the scene, and as first responders get close, getting the on a road is easy, but getting them to a specific point on that road is little bit harder especially in an area congested with houses," said Clark Nicklow, of Preston County 911.
The ordinance requires homes to have house numbers, no smaller than three inches tall posted on the house or at the end of your driveway.
Business are required to post numbers six inches or taller on their buildings as well.
