The Lewis County Commission has taken a step toward fighting bath salts sales.
The commission has approved the first reading of an ordinance that would establish civil penalties for selling the drug in the county.
Lewis County Sheriff Adam Gissy has been cracking down on drug use in the county since taking office and the proposed ordinance would give the county another tool to help in the fight.
"What the ordinance does is that it allows the commission to address business activity and the civil side of the distribution of synthetic drugs, while the sheriff's department can do the criminal side and the illegal," said Cindy Whetsell, county administrator.
The commission will hold a second reading and public hearing on the proposed ordinance at next week's meeting.
It may pass the ordinance after the hearing.
