Taylor County Support Group Aims To Help Cancer Survivors, Caregivers

It may be hard to understand the impact cancer can have on patients and their families if you haven't experienced it yourself.

A Taylor County group is providing support to all cancer survivors and their caregivers.

For Kelley Larew, the words "you have cancer" were some of the hardest she's heard in her life.

"I was stunned," she said. "I started thinking about my mortality. Am I going to die? What am I going to tell my children? What am I going to tell my parents?"

A mother of two, a soccer coach, and a preschool teacher. Larew is superwoman.

The support of family and friends helped her through her several years of breast cancer.

"I think the stress of being alone, the thought of being alone; that's what keeps our cancers growing," Larew said. "It's a positive thing to know that you have people on your side."

The Compassionate Warriors Cancer Support Group in Taylor County helps cancer survivors and their caregivers.

"It's beneficial because it gives them a place to talk about things that they don't want to talk about with others that are intimately involved," said Kit Conner, project coordinator.

Survivors and their families can meet with others going through the same thing without traveling to Morgantown or Clarksburg.

"There are people in Taylor County that would benefit from a support group and not have to have to travel outside of their home area," Conner said. "It would be more accessible to them."

Larew said groups like Compassionate Warriors allows all of those affected to fight the battle together.

"Some people feel, they just don't know how to help," Larew said. "Coming together as a group, when you have different people coming, its a way to just help share and hopefully understand how we all feel about how we go through this."

The Compassionate Warriors Cancer Support Group meets the third Thursday of every month at the Taylor County Family Resource Center.
