The Upshur County Commission is working with school officials to get a Prevention Resource Officer at Buckhannon Upshur Middle School.
It's applying for a $28,000 grant; $20,000 would go towards the officer's salary.
The Upshur County board of education would pick up the balance of the officer's salary and training.
Principal Renee Warner said having a PRO would reduce truancy and infractions involving alcohol and tobacco.
"I think his presence provides a safety net for them, they feel safe, they feel secure that he's there particularly in light of things that have happened in the last year or two with safety in schools around the country," Warner said.
This would be the middle school's first year PRO.
Buckhannon Upshur High School already has one.
