The West Virginia Industrial Home for Youth in Salem is a maximum security facility for juveniles.
The facility could become a jail for adults in the near future. It's possible that the West Virginia Division of Corrections will take over control of the facility.
Amanda Wiseman is a resident of Salem and a concerned citizen.
Wiseman asked the Salem Town Council on Tuesday to request a public hearing from the legislature so it can hear from the people of Salem before it makes any decisions.
Wiseman said she has many reasons for not wanting the facility to change.
"I was concerned with the Salem Elementary School being pretty much right across the street from the facility, what that would do for the safety of our community. There's churches right down the hill, there's a bus stop," said Wiseman.
Wiseman said her son will be going to Salem Elementary School in a year, and she isn't comfortable with a jail being across the street.
