City of Buckhannon Bath Salts Ban Effective April 6

Posted: Updated:

Buckhannon has become the latest city to officially ban the use and distribution of synthetic marijuana or drugs commonly known as "bath salts."

Buckhannon City Council approved the new ordinance at its last meeting.

The ordinance will go into effect April 6, and it passed with very little opposition.

Buckhannon is the fifth municipality to address this issue, and it seems that lawmakers in Charleston are looking at this as well.

Last year, Buckhannon was the site of one of the most substantial federal drug raids in the nation dealing with the sale and distribution of so called bath salts.

The ordinance creates a fine of up to $500.

Any synthetic marijuana or designer drugs fall into the bath salts category.

Mayor Kenny Davidson said there only targeting the problem.

"A number of municipalities and counties around the state are doing this very same thing, and I think it's another step in the overall war in illegal drug use," said Davidson.

Davidson said West Virginia Delegate Bill Hamilton could introduce a bill repealing a section of state code that allows the sale of drug paraphernalia.

Weston passed its ordinance on first reading March 4.
