WVU Philosophy Department Celebrates Applied Ethics Day

Posted: Updated:

Senator Rand Paul filibustered for almost 13 hours Wednesday, demanding a clarification from the White House of its policy on lethal drone attacks.

On Thursday evening, West Virginia University's philosophy department examined the issue for Applied Ethics Day. The department holds a lecture each year to demonstrate how philosophy can address practical and pressing ethical issues.

"Philosophy is not just counting the number of angels that can fit on the head of a pin," said Mark Wicclair a professor of philosophy at WVU. "We can actually do things that can illuminate very pressing, social issues. The other thing is just to provide for the community serious recognized scholars."

Professor Claire Finkelstein from the University of Pennsylvania was the guest speaker. She also discussed government secrecy and the rule of law.
