WVIAC Spotlight: FSU's McDonald Wins 3rd Conference Title in 6 Seasons

"I honestly almost feel like this is the best one of all. I can't articulate for you why I feel that way right now. It just feels very special," Fairmont State women's basketball Head Coach Steve McDonald said.

When you've been coaching basketball for as long as Steve McDonald has, the game becomes a way of life. On Saturday he entered the Charleston Civic Center looking for a WVIAC Tournament Championship, and departed as a three-time tournament winner. But he says don't look at him; thank the players that made it possible for a third conference championship.

"Players play. We've got good players. They play; they win games," McDonald said with authority.

"The team that we have is outstanding," Falcons senior point guard Kaitlin Snyder said. "I don't think that you can say that any team in this conference has better team chemistry than us, and I mean that with everything in me. So to go out with a team like this is phenomenal."

Fairmont State suffered a three-game losing streak towards the end of February that Coach Mac said, could have turned the season in any which way. But the Falcons recovered, winning eight of their final 11 games, along with a tournament championship. Now it's time to prepare for March Madness.

"I absolutely think that we are a very dangerous team. One of the reasons that I think that is we will be underestimated by everyone else because we were not in the regional rankings. The last thing that I told the players before we came together on the court when you heard them cheer, is that we are a part of March Madness, and that is very exciting," McDonald said.
