West Virginia University Hospitals is purchasing the Fairmont Regional Cancer Center, previously owned by Dr. Kirti Jain.
The purchase and upgrades would cost WVU Hospitals about $14 million.
"WVU Hospitals decided to make the purchase of Dr. Jain's Fairmont practice because we believe it's a good investment in the community, in keeping with our mission and responsibility as the state's premier academic medical center. We believe it's important to keep radiation oncology services in Marion County, closer to patients who need them at a critical time in their treatment for cancer. We will offer WVU Healthcare's state-of-the-art radiation therapy services there, so patients won't have to travel to Morgantown when they're feeling most vulnerable", said Bruce McClymonds, President and CEO of WVU Hospitals, in a statement.
Fairmont General Hospital CEO Robert Marquardt is also supportive of the change in ownership, "I've been concerned about the Marion County community possibly losing radiation therapy services. Thanks to this purchase by WVU Hospitals, patients here can get treatment here. When you're ill with cancer and getting radiation treatments, you don't feel well. Even a 40-minute drive can take a toll. With this reinvestment in radiation therapy in Fairmont, people here will have ready access to the most advanced technology. I couldn't be happier with this."
