Fairmont resident Christa Blais hopes to start an organic community garden in the city, and on Wednesday, she held a meeting to discuss the future of the project.
Blais had the idea to start a garden three years ago, and her plan is finally starting to come to life.
"The Master Gardeners came to me this year and said they were interested in doing a community garden too, so it all kind of came together," said Blais.
The garden would be located in Oliver Park in plots on top of the tennis courts.
"All the soil would be brought in and mixed with different organic composts to make it light and very fertile," Blais said.
Plans include a kids' garden, adoptable plots, and a part that will be used for a good cause.
"The other side will be for donations, so all that will go to the food pantries and different organizations that feed the hungry," Blais explained.
Representatives from the city of Fairmont love the idea of the garden benefiting the less fortunate.
"What a great way to infuse healthy local foods with those who are in need of that and can't afford to purchase it on their own. The mission and the soup opera they struggle with funding," said Kathy Wyrosdick, director of planning and development for the city.
Residents of Fairmont attended the meeting and plan to help with the garden.
"I plan to go in there and probably volunteer for anything that I can get my son to volunteer with me. So from the children to cleanup, anything that I can bring him along with I'll volunteer for," said resident Devann Hoffman.
Almost $1,500 is needed for the first phase of the project, and the city of Fairmont is willing to help.
"I'd like to say that the city will support in any way that we can, by encouraging, by supporting, by showing up, by cleaning up, doing anything that we can," said Wyrosdick.
The first step in the project is to clean up Oliver Park and get it ready for the garden.
Blais said they will most likely start planting next year.
