Everybody is born to do something, whether it's becoming a carpenter, a salesman, or even the next President of the United States. Bunky Harkleroad was put on this planet to coach basketball.
"My father was a very successful high school basketball and college basketball official," Glenville State women's basketball head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "My mother was an administrative assistant for an NAIA hall of fame coach, Roland Wierwille at Berea College. So I was raised in a basketball heavy environment, which Central Kentucky is rich in that area anyway."
In turn, basketball is rich inside Bunky. His Pioneer teams have advanced to Charleston every year in the conference tournament since taking over after the 2009 season. He believes this year's team is the best he's ever had.
"I just know I've been blessed with a group of players where the last two months, I've tried to stay out of the way. They seem to understand it. They're getting better. We have some hard-nosed players and if we're going to have any success in the post season, we've just got to keep the focus where it's been," Harkleroad said.
Sometimes following in the footsteps of winning coaches is much tougher than taking over for a losing program. Yet, Bunky Harkleroad has done it his way, continuing the winning tradition at Glenville. A tradition marked by wins, and a whole lot of them.
"When you quit learning, you need to start looking for another profession. I've learned a lot about our system. I've learned a lot about people, about surrounding yourself with the right people, and what we believe it takes to have a strong program," Harkleroad said.
