MVB MVP: Lewis County Center John Riley

Consistency may be a word used too often when mentioning good basketball players. But John Riley has redefined what it means to be consistent, thanks to a long summer spent working on his game.

"Everyday I was trying to get into the gym," Riley said. "When I was playing AAU, we always had practice and I love to be a gym rat. I love to stay in here and keep working at it. Some people don't like to stay in it but I love to."

There's no question John Riley has been an absolute beast on offense, averaging 23 points to go with 13 rebounds per game. But it's on the defensive side of the ball where his game has really flourished.

"Riley is a great player," North Marion head coach Chris Freeman said. "He's averaging a double double. You've got to plan your game around a guy like that."

Riley has scored in double figures every single game this season, while only tallying less than 20 points once this year. That type of performance has become just another day at the office for the junior star, who realizes next year could be a senior season for the record books.

"Lifting weights is the biggest thing because you've got to get stronger and maybe next year you'll see me dunking in some of the games," Riley laughed. "Hopefully somebody recognizes me and gives me a scholarship. I'll go anywhere."

At the pace he's at now, a college scholarship should be arriving in the mailbox any day now.
