Senator Joe Manchin was in Bridgeport Friday for a conference of state school superintendents.
Manchin talked with educators about how to make schools safer and how to provide more resources for educators.
He said the first step is making the schools more secure.
"Right now that's the first logical step to take. If we can keep someone out of the school who shouldn't be in or who has the wrong intentions or bad intentions. We've gotta make sure we're able to do that. And we have to make sure that our personnel are able to come in and know that it's safe. That it's a safe environment," Manchin said.
Manchin also said schools and policy makers need to work together to make sure Prevention Resource Officers are available for the schools.
