The American Veterinary Medical Association said West Virginia ranks fifth among the states in dog ownership.
And protecting them on walks is important.
The Cheat Lake Animal Hospital said dogs are at risk for hypothermia and frostbite, like anyone else.
It said clothing is an option but not to overlook their paws.
"In addition to clothing also worrying about their feet, because this time of year there are lots folks putting out de-icer on to the roadway or the sidewalks, and this de-icer can actually cause some damage to the pads of the feet," said Dr. Jesse Fallon, of Cheat Lake Animal Hospital.
The Cheat Lake Animal Hospital also said stray animals may use vehicles as refuge from the weather and recommends honking your horn or checking under the hood before you start your car up in the morning.
