One local organization received a grant from UnitedHealth HEROES to combat childhood obesity.
Mountain State Girls on the Run in Elkins received a $1,000 grant to help their 13 week running program. The organization is a life changing, character development program for girls third to eighth grade.
The grant money will also go towards their "running buddies" program. This pairs up high school students with a member for the organization's 5k walk/run.
UnitedHealth HEROES is a wellness initiative developed by UnitedHealthcare and Youth Service America. It's designed to help childhood obesity by working with educators to create walking, running or hiking programs.
More than $175,000 in HEROES grants awarded to nearly 200 schools and community-based nonprofit organizations nationwide. Each grant was up to $1,000.
