On Friday, wrestling that took center stage. As the West Virginia wrestling community knows, the sport is a big deal in this area of the country. But it means even more to the City of Fairmont.

"It's exciting for a young high school kid to come out and compete in front of a venue with all of these people here. We put on a quality event and we're hoping that the people can come out to watch it," Fairmont Senior wrestling head coach Mark Delligatti said.

There's a phrase that goes like this: If you build it, people will come. Well the Fairmont Senior wrestling community has spent several decades building the Winner's Choice Wrestling Tournament, and the people have followed.

"There's so many good, quality wrestlers here," Lewis County head coach Eddie Williams said. "This is by far one of the toughest we go to, other than the state tournament. So there's many AA and AAA kids here who could be state champions down the line."

The Winner's Choice High School Wrestling Tournament is hands down the largest bracketed tournament in the state; 31 high schools and nearly 400 wrestlers. There's no wonder why teams continue to flock to Fairmont for now the 34th consecutive year.

"It kind of brings a lot of business into the area. Some of these people, we see them once or twice a year. They like coming to our tournament and we like sponsoring it and representing the City of Fairmont and the Polar Bears," Delligatti said.

North Central West Virginia was well-represented at the Winner's Choice, however teams from Pennsylvania and Virginia were also in attendance. But how do you improve on an already great product? Well, just expand westward.

"This past year, they couldn't get in, but a team from Oklahoma actually wanted to come here. So I'm going to pursue that for next year. Hopefully we'll get them here," Delligatti added, "all these people want to come back. So that obviously shows that we're doing a pretty good thing here."
