The Division of Corrections has confirmed that Jeron Hawkins died at Ruby Memorial Hospital at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Hawkins' body was released to the custody of the Medical Examiner in Monongalia County.
West Virginia State Police and the Regional Jail Authority are investigating the beating of an inmate at the North Central Regional Jail that occurred Monday.
Regional Jail Authority Director Joe DeLong said Anthony Young, 35, a U.S. Marshals Service inmate, brutally beat Jeron Hawkins, 19, a state sentenced inmate.
Hawkins is at Ruby Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, DeLong said. His family members have been notified. DeLong said Young sustained minor injuries.
Hawkins was serving time for his role in the 2011 shooting death of Lucas Lee, 28, outside Karma night club in Morgantown after an argument over a spilled drink.
The jail authority is conducting its own investigation as to the events that led up to the altercation and the response after the altercation. State police are investigating the case related to criminal charges, DeLong said.
