West Virginia Reports Widespread Influenza Activity

The Monongalia County Health Department is reporting that influenza is widespread across the state. The dominant flu strain tends to cause more illness especially in children and the elderly.

Pharmacists said the best way to keep yourself healthy is by getting a flu shot. It is extremely important for pregnant women, people with diabetes and the elderly to get flu shots and it is never too late in the season.

"The flu shot is not going to give you the flu. It's an inactivated vaccine it's going to protect you against the flu," said Debbie Huffman, a pharmacist at Walgreens in Morgantown. "It takes about two weeks for you to be immune. If you do come in to get the vaccine it will take you two weeks to be immune to the strains included in this years vaccine."

You can get a flu vaccination at the Monongalia County Health Department, CVS Pharmacy and MedExpress Urgent Care during regular business hours.

Flu shots are also give at he Walgreens Pharmacy on Chestnut Ridge Road in Morgantown and it is open 24 hours.
