The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund said the number of officers killed in the line of duty this year was the lowest since 2009.
It said 127 officers were killed in 2012. Three of those officers were from West Virginia.
Sergeant Michael Todd May of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department was killed in February.
In late August, Trooper Eric Workman and Corporal Marshall Bailey, both from the West Virginia State Police, were killed following a shooting in Clay County.
Rick Adkins of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department said he puts little weight into the stats.
"It only takes one to have a bad year," said Adkins, who is the chief administrative officer. "As long as officers are killed, it's never a good year, whether the stats are high or low, or in the middle. The goal is nobody killed."
The numbers in 2012 are down 20 percent from last year and down for the second year in a row.
