MVB MVP: RCB Forward Devonti Birch

Posted: Updated:

All you've got to do is just take a look at Devonti Birch. He just looks like a basketball player. Someone who is born to play the sport, and he plays like it too.

"Coming in during the mornings, nights. It's all about work ethic," Eagles forward Devonti Birch said. "I like the way LeBron [James] moves and everything, so I try to learn from him. I watch some of his tapes and stuff and how he works."

"It'd be real easy for a kid with that kind of ability to be a 'me' guy, but he really isn't like that," RCB head coach Bill Bennett said. "As young as he is, he tries to lead a little bit. He tries to lead by example. He practices hard every day. He's really just all the things that you'd like to have."

There's isn't much not to like about his game. Birch is averaging a team-high 15 points per game, leading Byrd to an undefeated 5-0 mark early in the year. He even admits, one year can make all the difference.

"I kind of figured, going into my freshman year, that I'm just a role player, I've got to do some things then get out, I'll be subbed out. Once I just start hitting shots and knowing that they're going to feed me the ball and get me good looks, I just decide to take over," Birch said.

Oh, and one more thing.

"He's a sophomore," Bennett laughed.

Which means the state of West Virginia has officially been put on notice. The next high school basketball star may very well be right here in Harrison County.
