WVIAC Spotlight: WVWC New Head Football Coach George Shehl

Posted: Updated:

In 2004, George Shehl was a young college football player. If you were to fast forward to about eight years later, he looks about the exact same. There is not much of a difference when you're talking physique, but Shehl has changed quite a bit between the times, trading in the football pads for a life on the sideline; teaching, motivating and leading as a head football coach.

"Since the day I left playing football, I wanted to be a head coach," Shehl said. "To be able to start my head coaching career in my home region, 30 minutes from Clarksburg, it's like I couldn't have drawn it up any better.

Shehl was introduced last week as the new head football coach at West Virginia Wesleyan. He said his formula to winning is defense, and the numbers prove it. Last year as the defensive coordinator at the University of Charleston, the Golden Eagles defense finished best in the conference and third in the entire nation in Total Defense. Which means next year's Wesleyan team will be...

"We're going to be disciplined, we're going to be physical and we're going to be mentally tough," Shehl responded. "A group of guys that are going to play with a sense of urgency. We're going to practice hard and prepare hard."

Shehl's football career began at Robert C. Byrd High School, which carried him to West Virginia University. He said because of perseverance and determination, he finds himself right back in North Central West Virginia, where it all started.

"At West Virginia [University], I found a way on the field and I found a way to contribute to the team. All I could do was the best I could possibly do at my job and good things happen. I've taken that approach every step of the way."
