The police said more people will order online and have packages delivered by mail this holiday season and that could lead to an increase in theft if those packages are left unattended.
Buckhannon police Chief Matt Gregory said that if people can minimize the target they'll reduce the chances that a thief might steal a package from a porch or car.
"Thieves don't restrict themselves to certain hours of the day, for the most part they look for opportunities, and an opportunity is an easy target, and if we can minimize that we would reduce the chance of thefts," Gregory said.
Chief Gregory also said not to leave vehicles unattended while running or packages outside overnight.
If you have to be gone for a period of time ask your neighbors for help.
